Okay, so here's a thought I had. There are lots of interpretations of the Haltenning, but very few actually make a whole lot of sense. The Indoctrination Theory plays with the idea that the "breath" we see in the Destroy ending is actually Shepard waking up from Indoctrination. As it is, I can't rule that out, but I have serious doubts about IT. So, in an attempt to come up with alternative theories, I've contemplated possible explanations for various plot holes, and this breath in particular has taken my attention.

Let's suppose, for sake of argument, that all of what we see in the endings is actually happening and not some delusion or fabrication due to Indoctrination or a fever dream. The Catalyst really is there, saying everything honestly to the best of its ability, and Shepard really does choose to destroy the Reapers. In the process, the Citadel is apparently also destroyed while in geosynchronous orbit around the Earth, meaning that, best case scenario, Shepard is cast out into low-Earth orbit and plummeting through the atmosphere or, worst case scenario, blown to bits.

Obviously, any explanation that attempts to give a sensible reason for Shepard being alive would have to take the former of those two possibilities. How could Shepard survive falling from orbit? Obviously, she can't. Or can he?

There is good reason to believe that it is impossible for her to have survived the fall. For one, it's impossible in the real world. His body would be torn to shreds in the atmosphere, and that's assuming she could survive long enough without oxygen even to make it TO the atmosphere. A second reason is, of course, that it's exactly how he died before.

That's where I think I found a possible solution to the problem. Shepard died EXACTLY the same way at the beginning of ME2. What if, and I realize this is a big if, but what if it were possible that the Illusive Man wanted to protect his investment? What if Miranda and the Lazarus Cell didn't just bring Shepard back to life, but actually made enhancements - such enhancements that would make it possible to survive such an accident happening again?

It's definitely a possibility. Maybe unlikely that they would have predicted it way back then but it is possible.

but then why does the Illusive Man point a gun at shepard in the end. if he knows shepard can survive re-entry into a planets atmosphere then a simple bullet wont kill him, heck he gets blasted by Harbingers beam and survives. and before anyone says the beam never touched him, the heat and explosion caused by the laser would kill you instantly, think of it as like a grenades blast area. also dont think of this post as me being a dick.... people seem to think im a dick nowadays on here.....:confused:dont know why?

For the sake of argument I just throw the following thing into the argument ;)

First: Shepard has to survive the explosion she runs into when she's shooting the tube (BTW: Why am I shooting the tube??? :D)
Second: After this, Shepard has to survive the explosion of the Presidium ring...a thing which seems a bit unhealthy
Third (and last): After that, Shepard has to survive a full atmoshperic reentry (a thing that vaporizes most things) and then survive a crash landing without a parachute...

I know, Cerberus was retconned the most powerfull force in the galaxy, with armies at bay to scare the Reapers away just with the mention of their name...but giving Shepard the power to escape four fataly deaths? No way Cerberus could do this...

Think of it...they couldn't control the Rachni or the Thorian creepers in the end...:p

Why would people think you're a dick KoB? Did something happen?

I hate to say this, but it is possible to do jumps through low level atmosphere. NASA in the 60s sent a guy up and made him do several jumps, through out time of course and he survived.
So, technically, if this were real and did happen, it is possible that Shepard survived the fall. Just so you all believe me, here is the guy doing the jump from SPACE!

Don't get me wrong. I know it's all incredibly unlikely, but just because something's unlikely doesn't mean it's impossible. Heck, pretty much every theory ANYONE has come up with seems to qualify as "unlikely". IT SENSE NO MAKE!

Like some people have said, Mass Effect 3 was Shepard having a really bad dream. Maybe she/he got high from Thane?

I thought I had mild acrophobia, but after watching that video, I believe it may be a bit more serious than that.

Going back on topic, I like the creative thinking Bree (I was going to pick that rating, but the brush drove me away). But I can't see him surviving ALL that. Furthermore, another thing not often pointed out, if destroy really brought down the Citadel as badly as people claim, I would imagine there would be quite a bit more rubble than we see, with a bit more of it being on top of him. Of course, Indoc Theory doesn't explain how the rubble got on him when he was hit in a wide open field either, but that's beside the point. The point is that if you don't want to play along with Indoc Theory's salvaging attempts, you have to credit that part to either A) SPACE MAGIC!! or B) it was created at some different time than the rest of the ending and tacked on without making sure it was consistent (which is, as a sidenote, what I believe happened with the nonsensical Joker scene, where even Indoc Theory's explanation sounds silly).

That guy has some serious quads for doing jumps like that. Anyways, this. Soo much of this.

Nice thought but that fall took around 15 minutes to get to ground. The guy had an oxygen mask and a parachute not to mention a mostly working heated pressure suit. (One of the gloves sprung a leak on the way down) The guy was very high but not completely out of the earths atmosphere. That man was insanely brave. Or just insane. I'll go with brave. Still, without all these things any normal person would die. I know some will say that Commander Shepard was not normal. I disagree. I think Shepard was an ordinary person doing the extraordinary. That is why we love Shepard. So I will have to agree with cuttlefish-htewing's assessment on this issue. SPACE MAGIC!

Oh, I know. I'm just saying, it is possible to do low level atmosphere jumps without getting all burned up. So, if Shepard managed to find said gear and do the jump, he could live. And I like my getting high off Thane/ really bad dream idea.:cautious:

Just a point: Geostationary orbits (like the one the Citadel was in) are not low-Earth orbits. The ISS is in a low-Earth orbit (~250 miles up). Geostationary orbits are much farther out (~22,236 miles). Had Shepard been knocked from the Citadel when it was destroyed, he would have drifted along with the debris indefinitely, or started an elliptical orbit that would slowly decay over time until he finally entered the atmosphere. In any of those cases, he/she doesn't have a helmet on, so taking a breath isn't an option. In space, no one can hear you breathe.

Here's another question. The Citadel spins on its long axis to provide a comfortable simulation of gravity to the arms. Shepard is lifted to the point where the Crucible meets the Citadel - at the center of that long axis. Zero Gravity. His/her blood should be floating away in globules, not running down the arms.

Interesting... even if the Citadel did explode, with the lack of information how do you know that the chuck of the Citadel didn't re-enter the Earth's atmosphere and had a Mass Effect field? Shepard survived harsh landing in the mako in ME1 so...

also, in me2 shepard was fully geared and with shields active while in me3's ending he's battered up with no armor and more importantly no shields.

i've seen the argument that he might have survived if his gasp of breath was still on the citadel,
even if that explosion didn't send him to earth (killing him instantly on reentry) but rather blown up into the citadel, there's one tiny thing....

point me where in that ball of fire shepard would be.

ps: he also wasn't in the "citadel" at the time of explosion but rather in the crucible.

Is that really a ball of fire or is that the beginning of the anti-AI pulse? Isn't this thing green or blue when those options are chosen?

in synthesis it's also destroyed, while in control the arms of the citadel close again.
