I believe Bioware has already confirmed that ME3 will not be the last game to take place in the Mass Effect universe and that ME3 was the conclusion of Shephard's story but not the Mass Effect Universe. So my question is how would they even go about making another game set in the ME universe when that universe at least as we know it has been effectively destroyed.
All the endings contain the destruction of the Relays which is the backbone of Galactic Civilization. Not to mention the corny synthesis ending which as you might recall utilizes space magic to make all the species half robot. Insert facepalm here. Potentially, the Quarians and the Geth could both be wiped out and the Krogan can be facing almost certain extinction. To even make a new game work would probably necessitate retconning a lot of ME3 content especially the ending.

If they do make another Mass Effect game, I'm not buying it. I'm sticking with Shepards story and that story only.

True that. How the hell they think they can continue the series after a ending that destroys all galactic civilization and has more plot holes then swiss cheese is just beyond me. What the hell they were thinking when they did this, or even thinking at all. Despite all this in there face they still refuse. Very depressing, but thats why we are here no? :)

I always had this gut feeling that if ME4 was going to be an MMO set after the Reaper War, then they had to keep the Relays intact for travel. *GASP* what is they set the MMO on destroyed Earth?
Nevermind... I feel like I am talking out of my a**. I should get some sleep, I've been writing my fan-fic for five hours now.

I believe that lolHudson said that they would most likely NOT be making anything set after ME3 but would be set during the events of ME1 to 3. Far as I recall. I dont really remember the link for it or anything.

They'll either make an MMO or set it 1000 years in the future or some such friggin' nonsense. :(

Moving to the Mass Effect Trilogy forum as the other is for news. Feel free to continue, as I totally want to eventually contribute to this discussion on a non-moderatery post. :D

Well, I'm not buying it if they don't fix ME3 either... My guess would be a prequel during the First Contact War or something. Hopefully not, though. Whenever I read or watch a prequel it never feels as immediate because it's always in the back of my head that things were already decided so what does it matter what I do. I don't play MMO's either, so that's out for me as well. That narrows it down to a post-Reaper War game set a couple hundred years in the future with a whole new cast (and maybe a cameo/support role for Liara since Asari are so long lived). That's the hope, anyway.

I doubt that - whatever project is planned - it would be named Mass Effect 4.

But anyway... I dearly loved Dragon Age: Origin-Awakening and I rather enjoyed Dragon Age 2. Maybe because I haven't that emotional attachment to the Grey Warden I have to Shepard. Remember settings of the second game? Begins almost strictly the same time as DA:O, but with different character and continues in different place.

I'm somewhat curious about the future projects in ME universe, but, even if ME3 will get the ending we all want for it, for me the series ended with Shepard's story. There are many untold stories in the Galaxy, but... Eh. I try to find a way to tell that the new game in ME universe may be cool, but with no Shepard in it, it just will not be the same. I'd rather play massive epilogue, set as open-RPG (TES series, for example, and, as google helpfully suggests, Kingdoms of Amalur or Fallout). But endless continuation and exploration of Shepard's story and actions will bring Mass Effect down to the level of Sims Effect. Scary picture. Need lots of coffee, moar sleep and less math >_>

I doubt it will be MMO b'cause they already have SW:TOR.

Even if ME4 is made..why buy it? If the issues we want addressed are never addressed, there's absolutely no point to buy it. They'd have to convolute the story even more-so than they've already done to get enough material for a fourth installment. So, I don't really see a point in discussing it right now.

While I agree with everyone, I would like to keep an open mind. With other games, they clearly have 3 options:

It can take place BEFORE, AFTER, or DURING the trilogy. I have a suspicion that the DLC will take care of everything happening during 1 2 and 3, so that leaves a prequel (First Contact War?) or a sequel (Rebuilding? The combined fleet of the galaxy in Sol system? Mass Relays? Dark Matter?) Call me a minority, but this could work. I want the ending changed like everyone else, but if they have something happen after, that could be really interesting. Although, I cannot think who the antagonist would be. Just a thought :)

EDIT: Ok, apparently nothing is going to happen AFTER ME3. So says Casey Hudson. So this may possibly change.

ME4, the FTP MMO where you buy eezo with real dollars. Pray with me friends, for I have seen dark times. Dark times indeed.

I read somewhere the theory that given the catastrophic effect on the galaxy of the destruction of all the mass relays, all societies would be plunged into a dark age.

Given that and the 'space magic' ending, BioWare's master plan is for Dragon Age to be the 'sequel' to Mass Effect with Ferelden representing Earth once it's been fudged by the Reaper war and sprinkled with a bit space magic.

That makes just as much sense as the current ending of ME3, no offence intended o_O

What Space Magic can destroy, it can also create.

If we learned anything from the ending of ME3, it's that Bioware will sacrifice story, setting, characters and the overall atmosphere of the game to achieve their goal. With that sort of work around, ME4 could basically take place on Cybertron and Optimus Prime becomes the new Shepard character. Or maybe they move ME4 to a universe where everyone is space ninjas. It's all possible thanks to space magic!!

I really wish I could dig out the original post/blog. They summed up the whole translation from space opera to dak-ages fantasy much better than I've managed above.

I'll try to google it, sounds like an interesting read before going to sleep :) Still don't believe it, but with all this SPACE MAGIC... I just don't know what to expect anymore. I want to believe Bioware, still love the guys, but... Will expect the worst.

It was just a fan theory, and at that not a serious one. Kind of scary though that with only a little stretch of the imagination you could canon two such different series!
