I said "shock of the day". The Big Shock is that the game was well-written and well-thought out, if a bit linear, originally, with next to no plot holes outside of "how does Kai Leng, a well-known Cerberus Operative known FOR YEARS to have worked for Cerberus FOR YEARS, pass himself off as Kai Leng, the Friendly Neighbourhood Alliance Officer, to the VS?".

I sure as hell hope so.

Oh, and I forgot to thank you for inspiring my avatar with your sig =)

My point still stands. BW and it's writers are fucking idiots for missing this goddamn opportunity.

    Thanks Noelemahc
I find all this cut content depressing, would've made ME3 so much better with it in. Hope they not planning on releasing it as DLC, that would be a blatant cash grab.

Updated OP with table of contents for Beta Script dump sections.
For those with reading incontinence, here are the actual dump files. So far all I've been posting came from the Test one.
The full script file was too large (even compressed with utmost violence, it didn't fit the forum's max file size), so it was split into two. Sorry for slightly douchebag delivery format (partitioned RAR inside of ZIP), but forum doesn't allow archives other than ZIP =(

And we're back to where we left off, the Citadel Coup.

The Dwait mansion (from the Thane/Kolyat/Bailey mission) was a front for researching... INDOCTRINATION DEVICES! To which Sheppy-kun is IMMUNE.

    <position>8322
<data>Ok. [Kolyat exits the panic room and talks to Shepard just outside of it]I got captured by Cerberus. They caught me snooping one day, when I discovered their research weapon and eventually caught me. They were interrogating me to see who I told when I heard there were intruders in the front yard. I heard gunfire and the guards were distracted so I was able to escape and hole myself in this panic room

    <id>540900
    <position>8323
<data>I didn't want anyone to get hurt. I just wanted to show Bailey I was good enough to be a real C-Sec Officer. I'm sorry for the problems I've caused Shepard. But you must help me out

    <id>540901
    <position>8324
<data>Cerberus is running this place now. I am pretty sure they killed Mr. Dwait and started to use his laboratories for their research weapon. They've been using the mansion to develop and test the weapon

    <id>540902
    <position>8325
<data>They are making a portable indoctrination device the research labs underneath the mansion. They tested it on me - the effects aren't as strong as a Reaper, but this is a dangerous potential weapon. You lose control, Shepard. I heard some of the guards talking about using it to recruit and make sure that Cerberus hostiles don't get in the way of their mission

    <id>540886
    <position>8309
<data>You think Cerberus did this TO me? I volunteered. I wanted to see how it would work. I suggested it, Shepard.

    <id>540887
    <position>8310
<data>I didn't want to but he left me no choice. So, I suppose you are Francis Dwait

    <id>540888
    <position>8311
    <data>You mean the indoctrination device

    <id>540889
    <position>8312
<data>How can you say that after having just been controlled by Cerberus?

    <id>540890
    <position>8313
<data>Then I have no choice but to make sure this research isn't ever repeated. [Shepard kills Dwait and then destroys the weapon and the computers with all the research]

    <id>540891

No, that is stuff they CUT OUT after the Beta version leaked. And there's a LOT OF IT. This is the game we deserved, but not the game we received.

EDIT: Last piece for the night. Why the Crucible needs the Catalyst (remember, Javik is the Catalyst in this version).

That would be a good twist. A Prothean being the last component needed for us to understand the Crucible, a Prothean being the Catalyst.
He would use his telepathic abilities to "read" the machine and activate it using his DNA.
    It makes sense.

The Crucible being transfered from one cycle to another makes the reapers look incompetent. Back in ME1 when writing was good the reapers used to erase every trace of their existence.
The fact that the Protheans made their own relay and disabled the keeper reaction to reaper signals and the fact that they left warnings in "telepathic Prothean codes" incomprehensible to the reapers is the only thing that gave us a chance at opposing the reapers.

They made a totally decent story for ME3 (maybe even great, depends on the execution) and than they screwed it up.

As usual you dug up some great stuff there Noelemahc. Lot of pure story gold in there. The stuff we associate with BioWare of old.

And on the Prothean Catalyst theme, I wonder if Shepard (and Liara, ME3 seems to forget that) having the Cypher should have given some extra insight into the Crucible and possibly the Thessia artifact?

I really wonder why all this got cut? Was there just not enough time or resources to finish it all? Did it seem to "video gamey" for a certain individual? Did a ME fan run over a certain individuals dog?

The Thessia artefact is merely an Eden Prime-like beacon. It's explained that the Eden Prime beacon was supposed to be used on Javik to counteract the side-effects of prolonged cryosleep (loss of memory), but since it was removed long before he was dug up, that was not an option and that is where the Thessia beacon came in, and they use it on Javik, and he goes "Aha, now I remember how the superweapon works" and that's where Kai Leng swoops in and abducts the guy. No Vendetta, no talking about cycles, no unwinnable boss battle, he just blows the temple to crap, trapping us inside, takes Javik and leaves. And yes, it looks like in that temple crush, when Shepard has to pick which squaddie dies and which lives, ANYONE CAN DIE. Yes, kids, even Liara.

Another important thing: the Cipher lets Shepard understand Prothean, but not speak it. Javik didn't have no memory-absorption ability in this version of the script, so they use broken communications to talk to him - Shepard can understand what he's saying clearly, Liara can speak Prothean on a "Me am frend. Me halp yoo." level. It's hilarious to no end specifically because it's logical. Until Javik learns Galactic Basic, there's no other way of talking to him =)

I'll post it soon as I find all the pieces of that scene, the ones I saw thus far are clearly missing portions of the dialogue wheel.

All this makes so much sense. It's amazing to see what could have been. I still want to know WTF really happened between November and February when it went gold.

Man, I wonder how I missed all of this back in November when I originally read the leaked script. I do remember the Thessia choice, and about Javik being the catalyst, but now I really didn't see the rest of this, and now I agree with Shotgun_fu: What happened after the leak that caused them to drop everything that would have made the game make sense? No Starchild, no Kai Leng being stupid, and OMEGA.

This is all really great stuff. "The ME3 we deserved, not the one we got" is exactly how I'd describe it.

I also agree with you, Noel, that (with the exception of the extra stuff cut due to ... lack of time, I guess) all the terminal plot problems with ME3 stem from Javik no longer being the Catalyst. Because they wanted to make Javik the Prothean paid-fucking-DLC, they tried to sub the Bratalyst into a role that was built for a Prothean, not a God AI. Convinced now, more than ever, that ME3 was ruined by a blatant attempt at sucking more cash out of consumers.

In a world without day one DLC or pre-order 'bonuses', would this have ever happened? No, it would not, because there would be no reason to remove content to sell separately.

I wouldn't say they did it because they WANTED to make Javik DLC. I think it's the other way around, they made him DLC because he was no longer vitally important to the plot (just like Shale became DLC despite being a potential boon in the Orzammar/Deep Roads segment of DAO). Now, WHY they made him not be the Catalyst is a separate matter, one on which, I'm afraid, we'll never get a straight answer EVER.

Also, all of this is just from one script file of the three, and judging from the way things were done in the EC, the one where they put all the "we're not sure we're gonna implement this" ideas (like the one in EC that houses the "Oh, BTW, Harbinger is Reaper Number One" scenes). There's also a "we're totally not gonna implement this" file and a "this will probably go in the full game", but I'm leaving that for last =) They're all up for grabs earlier in this thread if you can't wait.

I also guess that once this is all over, I'll have to make a separate thread for "ostensibly, this is what ME3's original plot was before someone had a case of the Deus Ex".

Imagine that a video game being a video game.

I think it was 1 part time constraints, 1 part split resources between SP/MP & 2 parts lack of peer reviews.
Makes for a wicked Fan Flame cocktail.

I wouldn't be so sure that it was in that order. Just like Sebastian was so very clearly carved out of DA2 to become DLC/a pre-order 'bonus' (if you're not playing a bow rogue then who else is meant to use all those shiny bows that drop as loot?), I honestly think that a decision was made to cut Javik from ME3 because he was the best fit for a character DLC.

Which other party member could they do it to? Garrus, Tali, Liara, EDI and the VS couldn't be cut because people would scream and yell that we had to pay for a character that was already an established part of the series. That leaves James Vega and, well ... imagine the trailer for a James Vega character DLC. Lol. Actually do - it just cracked me up :p

"Hey yo, I was just in the gym, working on ma gunz when there was this EXPLOSION and I was like 'OH MA GOD, there's these Reaper foolz comin' to get in ma shit yo!' So I know I was like your jailer and all but like OH MA GOD, can I get on your ship and be all like 'BOOM BOOM, eat shit and die yo!' and then we'll ice some Reaper foolz and there'll be cake and it'll be k."

    * Yes.
    * [I used to be an option but Bioware removed neutral responses]
    * No.
    * Welcome aboard.
    * [Shoot James in the face]

Meanwhile, Javik is a Prothean - the last member of the supposedly extinct enigmatic species that came before our cycle - the ones that left us the Conduit, the beacon, the ones who were genetically redesigned by the Reapers to be our enemy in ME2. He's the only character that they could make DLC. You're right that we'll never know but imo it's more likely than not that the further they went along - with Javik and ME3 in general - the more they realised that he was the only one they could make DLC and so they cut him from the story first and changed the story to fit his absence.

Noelemahc, your work here is awesome.

I had thought that a lot of what gave rise to the Indoctrination Theory was pieces left over from an incomplete ending that was torn apart and rebuilt in a hurry, with some bits of earlier versions left. From all this, it sounds like they had a fairly coherent plot, almost finished, which for some reason they had to massively revise, in a big hurry.

At some point, I gave up wishing that ME3 could somehow be saved. At this point, I'm just trying to understand what happened.

I have no idea why they would have changed the plot so massively. It would have been easier to just invent a new character for Day One DLC than to massively re-engineer the entire game. I would guess that, whatever precipitated the changes, Javik was largely disconnected from his original role in the game, and so seemed dispensable; they just had to package the leftover pieces as DLC. That explains why Javik was already all but enabled in the game as released.

WHY IN THE ****CENSORED****....WHY DIDN'T THEY DO THIS?! *head explodes*

Where they really THAT short on time and money?! Or did someone pee in the decision making person's coffee when they decided to "completely rewrite" the story and cut it up like there's no tomorrow?
Man, everything ME3 could have been, ...right out the window with you...
    I'm dumbstruck....

And I think @Turambar is absolutely right. The game would have made so much more sense had they simply kept Javik as the Catalyst instead of replacing him with this broken AI thingy kiddo and cashing our Porthean out for 10 extra bucks. Greedy bastards, they are...:cautious:
