Community Tournament Idea

For the record: This thread is specifically to see if enough people are interested, details will be hashed out later and ALL suggestions/feedback is EXTREMELY welcome.
Also this is in no way shape or form a campaign for Mass Effect 3, this is purely for us as a community of HTLers to come together, have fun, and work towards a good cause!!

Today in the chat room an idea sprung up between @Gmandam @Goddess and myself @DJayRaIDeN with input from @Justin Simpson. What if we were to hold competitive tournaments on multiple platforms between HTL members? This is something that can be done multiple times. Possibly even once a week.

Here are a few of the ideas we have been bouncing around and they are not set in stone, feel free to add or comment as you wish

1. Anyone is welcome to participate that is from HTL. That is both for playing or spectating. (idea’s on how we can get spectation going for consoles or how to record and post would be greatly appreciated)

2. People may donate into the pot. Donating is not required to play or spectate, as this is just for fun. The donations may be anonymous or not, that is your choice.

3. All game ideas are welcome. Talk of private matches with Halo brought this idea about, and I personally would be interested in competing in fighting games such as Tekken. Again add your game suggestions below.

4. All donations would either go a charity of the winner's choosing, or to the HTL donation fund.

5.The current idea is we would use a chip in/paypal account, and have a well known person on HTL run the account so that there is no confusion or discomfort with someone handling the money. That money would then be sent to HTL or a charity in the winner or winners’ names. -edit- Talk of possible prizes being handed out to winners was suggested

The time for the first tournament will be set at Saturday (July 7th) @ 7:30 PM GMT or 2:30 EST.

Also we are going to close joining at 18 players. Sorry to say but if there are no issues anyone who wishes to join will have to wait. (Joining will re-open for the second tournament) - Edit - WE NEED TWO MORE PLAYERS TO JOIN US.

(Date's are also subject to change if for some reason not enough people can make it, you will be informed ASAP if this happens)
Dates you need to know:

Thursday 05/07/2012 = Team name and team composition to be made know to be hosts.

Friday 06/07/2012 = Brackets to be decided (who goes first, who plays who and who plays who)

Saturday 07/07/2012 7:30 pm GMT/ 2:30 EST = Main tournament begins.

A special chat room will be made in the HTL chatroom function to allow this to be made easier on the day(s) of the tournament(s).


OFFICIAL LIST OF RULES:
(rules are subject to change over time, and as always you will be alerted if they do.)

● All weapons will be allowed in the game.

● Respect your opponents at all times, If the referee feels like you are going too far you'll be asked to
stop (No worries about this though, the referee will only ask if someone complains) (this means that trash talking is ok, as long as it is tame and doesn't offend the other players)

● Only small maps will be used, so no vehicles.

● All power ups will be used in the game.

● Continued camping of power weapons and power ups is not sporting.

● Teams will be 2 v 2 (If you can’t find another player for a 2 v 2 in the tourney then all opposing teams will choose one player to fight for their team).

● A choice of five game modes will be offered: - Team slayer (Swat, normal slayer and Free for all) , Team Swords(Low grav or normal settings), Team Griffball (???), Team gravity hammers (Low grav or normal settings) Team races.
● Both teams must agree with the choice, otherwise the referee will have the deciding choice on what game mode.

● The referee will be the host and will kill himself (to avoid his presence on the game). If there is a issue the referee will decide on the action and the players will follow it. If the players feel that the referee has been unfair then they can save the game clip (a feature that halo has) and send it to one of the heads of the tournament. At which point 3 people (one Player who hasn’t fought the teams, one who has fought the teams and one of the organisers will decide on the appropriate action).

• The maps will be randomised to the small maps, if the teams continue to disagree over the map, then the referee will choose for them.

-Only players and the Ref/Host (Also eventually the person with the capture cam) are allowed in the game/party chat

In my opinion, while there was talk of maybe doing a buy in, I am against this idea. The first and foremost goal of this is for fun friendly competition within the community, any funds coming of it for donation to charity or HTL is just icing on the cake.

I take it its a Mass Effect 3 MP tournament?.

@Martin Nope. It can be any game that we can get enough people to participate in. Mass effect 3 really isn't a competitive multiplayer game, think more along the lines of halo or fighting games or even CoD.

I love this idea. I think the first one, or few, should be free to see how many people are interested, and if it's a success then not only start using them to raise money for HTL but do different games as well. The hardest part is going to be finding enough people on the same platform, the 360 is the most popular among the people that I know what they have but I don't know if that's true for all of HTL.

@EagleScoutDJB Thanks for the input. The intention is for the tournament to be the main thing to focus on, and that anything involving money, when its donating into the pot or placing wagers, is entirely optional. There is no reason why the first one couldn't be without anything involving money though.

I do agree that it would be hard to get people on other platforms, I myself am a 360 user, but the good thing about tournaments is that they can be different sizes, or could involved double elimination or even best out of 3 ya know? Would be nice to know who plays on what system for sure, and I think that is something that can be addressed after this first phase if it takes off and enough people are on board with the idea

@Syrin Glad you like the idea I agree that this would just be fun on a epic scale haha

I do not see how it would constitute gambling, considering that not only is the money purely optional, it is for non profit gains. No players would recieve the money. You could look at it as raising money for charity, or if people choose to send it to HTL it could just be considered a In-house fundraiser ya know? I also like the idea of prizes!! Maybe some HTL hats or T-shirts involving the tournament or something?

I agree we do need to find out who has what system... I can make a poll to find out who has what console if you want. I can do both 360 and PC, and for the record any game is up for grabs so feel free to suggest whatever

Also... I was going to ask if maybe we could get this stickied? I know that is usually reserved for important things but... I am thinkin maybe seeing something involving fun within the community up there might do the site some good ya know? its always stuff about Chris P up there or campaign stuff. Don't have to sticky it, its just a suggestion is all

I'm all for this idea. It would be great. Personally I don't think money has to be involved. I'd rather see it just be a fun community thing.

Anyway,

A simple capture card would be used to record footage. It's not that complicated and there's plenty of guides out there for the different existing cards.
As for spectating, in MLG for example they simply have set a team player number and have the spectators occupy the spots left over. For "scrims" over the internet an independent host also occupies a spot so network connection isn't as big of a player. I guess someone spectating could set up a livestream so others could get in on it aswell?

I have actually been considering buying a capture card.

Thanks for the info on the spectating as well. Feel free to link me to such things. I know with certain RTS games they have spectate mode and what not, I am particularly thinking of warcraft and starcraft. Counterstrike does as well. Those can always be streamed by someone spectating with like twitch TV or something... was more just concerned about the xbox and ps3. thank you though!

what would be nice is if there was something that can just stream live what is on your tv or monitor ya know? also the audio chat between players. I will look into that if this takes off.

I was speaking about consoles.
The audio will be recorded through the spectator same as video. So you might need two specs if you want to cover everything instead of changing teams.

Anyway. It is possible to do this. Everything the spec is seeing you'll see. I will try to get a few links. sec.

edit: You won't get around using a capture card I think.

well. depending on the game we would need one or two spectators, audio aint the problem because we could all be in the same party, but for the video feed particularly for a game like say halo, you would need 2... how that would work I dunno, unless each player records the game themselves. Getting one PoV is fine I guess but it would be nice to have it for all. Would be easier for like say fighting games because both are on screen.
