Young Guns: Escape Part 5

“You good?” The girl asked as she made the turn and sped away.

Sitting back in his seat, Angel breathed slowly in an attempt to calm his nerves, “No. I’m pretty far from it.”

The freeway wasn’t too busy as they passed exits and cars. The engine hummed as they drove in complete silence. Through the bustling streets of the metropolitan behemoth that was Newfield City. Angel kept his gaze to the passing buildings as he thought of what to say next. For the last hour, his eyes drifted back to the digital clock in the dashboard. He couldn’t stop thinking about the man that attacked him not too long ago.

The giant lifted him off the ground, and Angel felt the life slipping from him as he struggled for air. How could a human crush the life out of someone body with one hand? How did he manage to get up after being shot in the head? Angel’s questions immediately shifted to what concerned him more than anything else. What was happening to him?

He heard a groan followed by the girl’s voice, “Aww, you’re a Reader, too?”

“What?” Angel shook his head as he looked at her.

“A Reader.” She raised her voice and rolled her eyes as if he should know this, “A telepath. Mind reader. Look, can you project your thoughts somewhere else?”

Angel sat forward, confused by her query, “What are you talking about?”

“You’re throwing your thoughts at me! I’m hearing everything, so tone it down!” She looked back to the road and flipped the turn signal. They got off at the next exit and turned left underneath the highway.

Embarrassed, Angel sat back in his seat and sank as far as he could. He could read minds? This just kept getting weirder by the moment, but his thoughts shifted as he saw the poorly lit road up ahead, “Where are we going?”

“I told you. You’re gonna meet my boss.” The car went for a while down the road, but came upon a dark structure. It seemed to be an abandoned warehouse, and they were going right for it.

Angel rose in his seat, his muscles tensed as he fought the urge to question what was happening. The girl pulled the car around to the back of the building where a light suddenly blared, revealing a service entrance as they pulled up. The dark opening wasn’t inviting at all, but Angel’s head snapped to the girl as she turned off the engine, “What are you doing?”

“Easy with the jitters, okay?” Her attitude was just as bad as her people skills, he thought, “You wanted to know where we were going. Well, here we are.”

Angel scurried to follow her, opening the car door and cringing as he stepped on the sharp gravel. The air was a bit chilly in the midnight country outside Newfield City, but it was even worse on his bare behind. He shuffled after the girl, but she strode too quickly in her boots, and he lost her to the darkness of the warehouse. Stopping, Angel squinted, failing to see into the dark, jumping as he heard the girl’s voice, “Would you come on?”

Angel sighed. Why couldn’t he just go home and see his father? All this was so confusing, and it only became more confusing as the night continued. He stepped slowed into the building, clenching his fists as he walked. Just as he cleared the entrance, a loud clamor came from above him as the gate slide down quickly, slamming the floor and leaving Angel trapped in the dark. An explosion of light stung his eyes as bulbs came to life overhead.

Rapidly looking around, the boy wanted to run, but to where? It looked as though the only entrance was the one he came through, but now he was stuck, “Found the light switch.”

He turned to see Crosshair near the gate operating a fuse box. The area was quite open, and it was clear that the building was once a factory of some sort. But there was nothing but a few dust-covered, metal tables bolted to the floor and a staircase on the far side of the building. It looked like there was another level to the warehouse, but he didn’t care. Angel frowned, “Okay, now you’ve got me in a warehouse. I thought you said we were going to meet your boss or whatever.”

She turned to him with her searing brown eyes, nodding as she then looked passed him. A voice now entered his ear, but now it was a male’s voice, “And here I am.”

Angel turned sharply to face a tall figure. The boy stumbled a bit as he backed away, but the man did not seem threatening. His auburn eyes seemed to speak more than his appearance; something that was strange as Angel felt himself begin to calm. The warming sensation began to spread quickly through his body as if he drank a mug of warm milk. He felt his eyelids getting heavy as he began to sway slightly, placing his palm on his forehead, “What’s going on?”

I’m sorry, but you seemed to be distressed. I reached into your mind and released a small amount of endorphins to calm you down. I understand that the first time can be- The voice came from the man, but it was the same as before. Angel felt the voice bounce around his head as if it was his own, but heavier and more pronounced. Unsettling.

Angel’s eyes widened as he heard a voice in his head for the second time during the evening. He was sure he had lost his last bit of sanity since he wasn’t hearing his own thoughts. From sending a man clear through two walls to becoming invisible with a thought, the boy didn’t know what to think anymore. All he knew was that he felt sleep take a tighter grip on him, his eyes were only half open now.

The man stepped forward, his eyes intently on Angel now, but the boy couldn’t take it. His mind was too chaotic, and although the lights of the warehouse were bright, his world began to darken. The boy lost his balance and tumbled backward, his eyes snapped shut and everything went black. In the comfort of sleep, his dreams were a way to escape, but this was not a getaway. The voice entered his mind once again. Rest now. You will understand soon.
